Canvasdoc

Live at Cal Poly and UCLA · more schools soon

A study partner in the margin of every assignment.

Canvasdoc opens beside your Canvas coursework. It reads the instructions, the rubric and your course files, keeps a separate conversation for each assignment, and runs on your own computer.

A database lab assignment in Canvas with the Canvasdoc panel beside it. The student asked what the lab is asking for and where most of the points are; Canvasdoc lists the three queries and starts on how the rubric splits the 40 points.
  1. the assignment you have open
  2. reads the rubric & lecture notes
  3. stays with this assignment

§ 1 · How it works

Three steps, about five minutes.

  1. Add the extension

Canvasdoc appears inside Canvas, beside each assignment, quiz and discussion, and on your dashboard.

  2. Run one setup command

It installs a small companion on your Mac or PC. The companion runs the agent through Codex, signed in with your own ChatGPT account.

  3. Ask from the page you're on

The conversation stays with that assignment, so next week it still knows what you were working on.

§ 2 · What it does

It starts from the assignment, not from a blank chat.

reads Canvas

Knows what's being asked

Instructions, rubric, due date and linked files come from the page you have open, through your own Canvas sign-in.

your folder

Course files in one place

Materials you can already open in Canvas are copied to a folder on your computer, sorted by course and assignment, where the agent can search them.

practice

Quizzes you in the chat

One question at a time, with multiple choice, written answers, or a code editor for programming classes. It reacts to each answer before the next.

files you keep

Makes things you can open

Study guides, flashcards and interactive explanations are saved as files in your folder and preview right in the panel.

What's due, sorted

Your dashboard groups what's due today and tomorrow, and you can add your own tasks next to Canvas's.

Remembers how you work

Corrections and preferences carry over: how you like to write, what each class keeps asking for. You don't have to repeat yourself.

In the margin, up close

Real screens, from a practice course.

The student asks to be quizzed on joins before starting. Canvasdoc answers with question 1 of 5, built from the lecture notes, with three join types to choose from and a Hint button.

Beyond the margin · Workspace

The same conversation, with room to work.

Expand the assignment's conversation into Workspace. Read your course sources beside the chat, or open a file the agent made. The work stays in your folder on your computer.

Lab 4: Joins and Aggregates in Workspace. The expanded conversation explains the three queries and rubric, with the assignment and lecture notes listed in the Sources inspector on the right.
01 · Sources beside the chat

The lab conversation, expanded. The Sources inspector lists the assignment and the course files saved in your folder.

§ 3 · Your computer, your account

Nothing about your coursework lives on our servers.

  • Runs on your computer. The agent works in a folder you choose, through Codex and your own ChatGPT account. Canvasdoc doesn't run a server that stores your conversations or files.
  • Uses your existing Canvas sign-in. It never asks for your Canvas password or an API token.
  • Doesn't submit for you. It won't turn in work or change anything official in Canvas unless you specifically ask it to.
  • Plain about the beta. While Canvasdoc is in beta, testers share diagnostics with the developer to help fix problems. You can switch that off in Settings.

§ 4 · Schools

Open at two schools. Yours could be next.

§ 5 · Questions

Before you ask.

What do I need?

A Mac or Windows computer, Google Chrome, and a ChatGPT account. The setup command installs everything else, including Codex.

What does it cost?

The agent runs through Codex on your own ChatGPT account, so its usage counts toward your ChatGPT plan's limits.

Is this for doing my homework?

It's for understanding and keeping up with your coursework: explaining material, quizzing you, giving feedback on your drafts, and keeping track of what's due. Follow your instructors' rules on AI use. Canvasdoc never submits anything to Canvas unless you ask.

Can it use my browser or other apps?

If you turn on Computer Use in the ChatGPT desktop app, the agent can work in Chrome and other apps when you ask it to. It asks before using each new app or website.

Does it work with my school's Canvas?

Today it works at Cal Poly and UCLA. Each school's Canvas is enabled separately, so join the waitlist with your school's name and we'll email you when it opens there.
